A popular author during the Civil War period, William H. Prescott, is who the city is named for. Some of the works he is known for include The History of Ferdinand and Isabella, The Conquest of Peru, and others. As of 1863, Prescott was a small mining town, but it has since developed into an influential and large Arizona city. Prescott is the home to Arizona's oldest existing restaurant and bar, The Palace, located on Whiskey Row.

Prescott's architecture is unlike many other Arizona cities, focused more on Victorian-style than the Western architecture seen throughout much of the rest of the state. It also maintains older buildings more actively than many other cities, and 525 of the city's buildings are included in the National Register of Historic Places. The number would have been even higher had a major fire not destroyed many of the city's oldest buildings in the early 1900s.

Entertainment is focused on a large number of annual festivals for residents. A few of these include the Bluegrass Festival, Frontier Days, and many other activities for residents of all ages and with a number of different interests.
