As part of our ongoing mission to be a leader in the auto glass and windshield replacement industry, SafePro Auto Glass is proud to announce the launch of our new windshield recycling program. When you have auto glass or windshields replaced by SafePro, we’ll send your old glass to a glass manufacturing facility here in Phoenix for recycling. Discarded auto glass can take up to one million years to degrade in a landfill and is otherwise 100% recyclable without losing purity or quality, making it the perfect material to reclaim and recycle over and over again.
Windshields are a type of laminated glass or safety glass that stays intact when shattered to prevent harm to passengers in a vehicle. When a windshield breaks, the glass is held in place by a thin film of plastic between two or more layers of tempered glass. Unlike home replacement window glass, automotive glass is specially made to withstand high impact and is a structural component of a vehicle’s safety barrier. A broken windshield is typically thrown in the trash after being replaced, however, as part of our new recycling initiative, the glass is added as “cullet” to the glass manufacturing process.
Cullet is broken or crushed glass that is combined with sand, soda ash and limestone to create furnace-ready recycled glass. The only material used in greater volumes than cullet is sand. These materials are mixed, or “batched,” heated to a temperature of 2600 to 2800 degrees Fahrenheit and molded into the desired shape. Recycled auto glass can be substituted for up to 95% of raw materials used in the glass manufacturing process.
The US alone throws away enough glass to fill a football stadium every month. We saw the broken glass replaced by our installers every day as a huge opportunity to save on the energy required to mine, refine and deliver raw materials to a glass manufacturer. Please join us in our stewardship to help reduce the environmental impact of the auto glass industry by recycling your windshield with SafePro Auto Glass.
